Stunning wolf spider in his sophisticated multilayered web in Tena, Ecuador

Aglaoctenus castaneus is a remarkable, web-building wolf spider (family: Lycosidae) native to South America. Unlike most of their Lycosid cousins that roam freely as active hunters, this species weaves complex, horizontal, non-adhesive sheet-and-funnel webs to capture prey. To construct their expansive snares, they perform unique spinneret movements unseen in other wolf spiders; they lay down wide “swaths” of silk lines to bridge distant objects and manipulate their spinnerets like a comb to shape the web. I encountered this fascinating spider during my very first visit to Tena, Ecuador, back in December 2023.
