Blue blood in black-and-white body: Meeting the curious Freya decorata in La Perla

Freya decorata is a striking Neotropical jumping spider (family Salticidae) native to northern South America. Renowned for their dramatic black-and-white patterns and highly inquisitive behavior, these arachnids are formidable daytime hunters. Rather than spinning webs to catch prey, they rely on their excellent eyesight to stalk and pounce on targets, capable of leaping several times their own body length with pinpoint accuracy. Interestingly, this species exhibits notable sexual dimorphism, and like many arthropods, their hemolymph (the spider equivalent of blood) is actually blue. This striking coloration comes from hemocyanin, a copper-based oxygen-transporting compound, unlike the iron-based hemoglobin found in humans. While they don’t weave traditional webs, they never leap without a plan, always anchoring a silk dragline as a safety tether when climbing or pouncing. I crossed paths with this stunning little hunter during one of my excursions into the protected coastal forest of La Perla.
