Resting along tropical shorelines like an aquatic stealth hunter, semi-aquatic spiders of the genus Thaumasia are true marvels of the Neotropical rainforest. Belonging to the nursery web spider family (Pisauridae), these remarkable arachnids ditch traditional webs to hunt directly on the water’s surface, detecting prey by sensing tiny ripples traveling across leaves and water! Their extraordinary family care is where they truly shine. A mother Thaumasia carries her large egg sac everywhere in her jaws, guarding her unborn spiderlings around the clock. When the eggs are just about to hatch, she finds a cluster of leaves near the water and spins a protective, tent-like dome of silk. She places the egg sac safely inside and stands guard right outside the nursery until her newly hatched babies are strong enough to venture out on their own. I photographed this devoted mother guarding her silk nursery while exploring the lush protected forest of “La Perla” in Santo Domingo, Ecuador—an unforgettable encounter with one of nature’s most devoted guardians!
