Sheet weavers, or dwarf spiders (family Linyphiidae), typically construct a flat, dense “sheet web” or dome rather than a traditional spiral orb. They often weave these silken structures into three-dimensional shapes, creating a protective “pocket” or retreat beneath or to the side of the dome. This allows the spider to hang upside down in total concealment, darting out the moment the sheet vibrates. Above the main sheet, they string a tangled maze of vertical “knockdown” threads; when flying insects strike these barrier lines, they lose their balance and tumble onto the sticky sheet below. I spotted this remarkable sheet weaver guarding its pocket web on a leaf during my visit to the protected forest “La Perla” in Ecuador’s Santo Domingo province.
