Dinner on the scene: Photographing a stunning orange orb-weaver mid-meal

Meet the lesser garden spider (Metellina mengei), a common yet captivating European orb-weaver that peaks in activity during the spring and early summer. This seasonal timing is a crucial clue for nature enthusiasts, as it helps distinguish them from their nearly identical cousin, Metellina segmentata, which only matures later in the autumn. In the miniature world of this species, romance is a battlefield: males engage in fierce wrestling matches for the right to court a female, using their elongated front legs to grapple until the larger competitor claims victory. You can easily spot their architectural handiwork by looking for a characteristic tilted orb web featuring a distinct, open gap—or “keyhole”—plucked right out of the center. These spiders are dedicated caretakers of their traps, performing daily maintenance and routinely eating damaged silk to recycle the vital proteins. Equipped with exceptionally long jaws, called chelicerae, they are formidable hunters. I crossed paths with a beautiful orange specimen just as it was busy consuming a trapped flying insect, a fortunate distraction that granted me the perfect window of time to capture several sharp, high-detail macro photos.
