The chemical warfare on the dunes: Meeting the Lithoblaps beetle of Faro

As flightless masters of survival, darkling beetles of the genus Lithoblaps are spectacularly adapted to harsh, arid landscapes. Often referred to as “stink beetles,” they possess a dramatic defense mechanism: when threatened, they perform a striking headstand and eject a dark, pungent-smelling fluid laden with defensive hydrocarbons and quinones. To precisely deploy this chemical weapon, they utilize a mucro—a prominent, sharply elongated tip at the apex of their abdomen. This potent secretion serves as an excellent deterrent against predators, though it can leave stubborn, long-lasting stains on human skin. I crossed paths with this fascinating, robust individual navigating the sun-drenched sands of a beach on the Ilha Deserta in Faro, Portugal.
