The hooked striking jumping spider (Icius hamatus) is a tiny jumping spider (family: Salticidae) native to the Mediterranean. Like all jumping spiders, it possesses eight eyes, dominated by two large, front-facing primary eyes that grant exceptional depth perception. This allows them to calculate exact distances before launching a precise leap onto their prey. Males are a vibrant rusty brown with bright white stripes running along their bodies and pale, whitish legs. Females, by contrast, are well-camouflaged in muted tones of beige, grey, and dark mottling. While typically a Mediterranean species, they have occasionally been introduced to Northern and Western Europe via imported fruit trees. I encountered this incredibly active male in Beja, Tunisia, while visiting a friend’s farm.
