Microgoniella is a colorful genus of Neotropical sharpshooter leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) first described in 1926 by entomologist Leopold Melichar. Found across Central and South America, these insects belong to the subfamily Cicadellinae, specializing as xylem-feeders that utilize needle-like mouthparts to extract fluid directly from plant tissues. I crossed paths with this vibrant specimen during a field excursion to Nanegalito, a peaceful village nestled within the highly biodiverse Mindo Valley region. Located just a scenic, one-hour bus ride from Quito, it is an absolute paradise for nature photographers!
