Appealing and voracious: The leaf-footed bugs of La Perla

Leaf-footed bugs (family: Coreidae) are a species-rich group of true bugs celebrated for their specialized, often leaf-like hind legs and remarkable camouflage. Among them is Anasa bellator, a striking leaf-footed bug belonging to the same genus as the notorious North American squash bug (Anasa tristis). This particular species is widely distributed across the lush ecosystems of Central America, Mexico, South America, and the West Indies. Mirroring the behaviors of its close generic relatives, it utilizes a specialized, needle-like proboscis to pierce plant tissues, sucking sap directly from the leaves, stems, and fruits—a feeding habit that can occasionally cause localized damage to agricultural crops. When threatened, they rely on specialized scent glands to release a pungent, foul-smelling chemical defense. I crossed paths with this charming little insect while exploring the dense, protected rainforest of “La Perla” in Ecuador’s hyper-diverse Santo Domingo province.
