Leaf-footed bugs (Coreidae) are a large family of predominantly sap-sucking insects characterized by their flattened, leaf-like expansions on the hind tibiae (lower legs). I encountered this handsome individual resting quietly on a leaf in the city park of Puyo, Ecuador. With the pale, geometric markings forming an incomplete “cross” across its dark back, it bears a striking resemblance to the famous Australian crusader bug. However, this Neotropical beauty is actually a local cousin—likely from the genus Phthia—distinguished by its own unique, intricate patterns and widened and coloured hind legs that help it blend seamlessly into the dense Amazonian foliage.
