Sundarus is a genus of eye-catching leaf-footed bugs (family: Coreidae) native to the tropical rainforests of South America. Famous for their brilliant colors and metallic sheen, these insects get their family name from the distinctive, flattened leaf-like fins many species wear on their back legs—though some sport completely normal, slender legs instead! I managed to capture this industrious bug at the exact moment it pushed its long, straw-like beak deep into a leaf, tapping into the plant’s nutrient-rich juices for a drink. I encountered this beautiful specimen while exploring the dense pathways of a small botanical garden in Puyo, a town nestled in the hyper-diverse Amazon region of Ecuador.
