Caught in the act: The stunning leaf-footed bug of Puyo

Leaf-footed bugs (Coreidae) are a large family of true bugs belonging to the order Hemiptera. These medium-to-large insects feed primarily on plant fluids, are remarkably strong, noisy fliers, and are famous for the distinct, leaf-like expansions on their hind legs. This particular specimen was a true giant, measuring well over two centimeters in length and boasting a beautifully intricate coloration. While walking through the city park in Puyo, Ecuador, I spotted it resting against the deep shadows of the forest canopy and managed to snap some stunning high-contrast photos. The process took me several minutes of crouching completely still, which deeply amused the locals walking by, who were clearly wondering what on earth this crazy tourist was doing staring into the bushes!
