Meet the sage green beetle (Oedemera virescens), a type of false blister beetle (family: Oedemeridae) measuring a modest 8 to 12 millimeters in length. While both sexes sport a lovely, muted green coloration, the males possess a highly comical feature: dramatically swollen, “bulky” hind thighs. Interestingly, these oversized legs aren’t built for jumping; they are purely ornamental, used to show off and wrestle rival males during mating rituals. As adults, they spend their days happily roaming sunlit meadows and feasting on yellow or white wildflowers, acting as beneficial pollinators. Their larvae, however, live a completely different lifestyle, boring deep into decaying plant stems and dead wood to help recycle nutrients back into the forest floor. But don’t let their peaceful meadow foraging fool you—if threatened, these beetles can secrete a blistering, caustic chemical called cantharidin from their joints, easily convincing predators to look elsewhere for lunch. I spotted this beautifully colored, smooth-muscled beetle resting on a wildflower during a sunny stretch of my bicycle tour in Sweden.
