Pink socks and silver stripes: The dapper male green silver-lines moth

Meet the green silver-lines moth (Pseudoips prasinana), a breathtakingly beautiful canopy dweller found in forests and parks across Europe. True to its name, this moth looks like a tiny leaf decorated with crisp, diagonal silver-white stripes. But it is the males of the species that are the true fashionistas of the forest floor: they sport bright pink wing fringes, matching pink legs, orange antennae, and yellow hindwings (which are a simple, clean white in females). Beyond their stunning colors, these moths are famous for their acoustic mating calls. Using a specialized, ribbed organ called a tymbal, the males produce high-frequency clicking sounds to serenade potential mates. Even their larvae are extraordinary; they feed on oak and birch leaves and spin cocoons of silk with a protein structure remarkably similar to that of the famous domestic silkworm (Bombyx mori). I was incredibly lucky to spot this gorgeous male resting on a leaf in a Swedish forest—its brilliant green camouflage blended so perfectly with the surrounding foliage that it was nearly invisible to the naked eye!
