Females track down butterfly and moth caterpillars or pupae, injecting an egg inside so the emerging larva can feed safely within its host. To locate hidden prey under leaves or bark, females perform a fascinating dance—drumming their antennae rhythmically against plant stems to feel for tiny vibrations! Once mature, the adult wasps feed peacefully on pollen and sweet nectar, particularly favoring umbrella-shaped flower clusters. I’ve encountered these stunning wasps multiple times in meadows and forests around Akalla, Sweden.
