Meet the “conga”: The bullet ant feared by the locals in the Amazon rainforest

The bullet ant (Paraponera clavata) is a giant tropical rainforest ant native to Central and South America. Best known for possessing the most painful sting of any insect, this formidable creature packs a punch that victims frequently compare to being shot by a bullet. Their venom contains a potent neurotoxin called poneratoxin—a peptide that disrupts the nervous system, causing tremors, muscle contractions, and even temporary paralysis. Growing up to 3 cm in length, they are true giants. While their nests are typically built underground at the base of trees, they are excellent climbers that forage high in the forest canopy at night for nectar and small arthropods. I encountered this impressive individual during my first photography excursion into the Amazon rainforest.
