Looking like a piece of living wood washed in soft rosy light, Xylophanes epaphus is a true jewel of the South American rainforest. Belonging to the sphinx moth family (Sphingidae), its genus name combines ancient Greek words meaning “appearing like wood”—a fitting description for an insect whose brown wings blend seamlessly into jungle bark and fallen twigs! What sets this particular sphinx moth apart from its darker relatives is the delicate pinkish blush dusted across its wings. Thriving in the humid, warm forests of French Guiana, Suriname, Ecuador, and northern Brazil, adults stay active year-round without needing to hibernate. As they dart at lightning speed between jungle blooms to sip nectar, their size and hovering acrobatics create a brilliant optical illusion, causing them to be regularly mistaken for agile hummingbirds! I managed to capture this impressive moth while it was briefly resting on a broad leaf during my very first expedition into the Ecuadorian Amazon—a magical moment from the heart of the rainforest!
