Joppa is a genus of Neotropical parasitoid wasps (Ichneumonidae) first described in 1804 by Danish zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius. Found across Central and South America, these wasps are easily recognized by their distinct antennae, which thicken noticeably past the middle before tapering, and their high-contrast warning colors of bright orange, yellow, and black. Despite being known to science for over two centuries, their exact host preferences remain largely mysterious. I had the pleasure of encountering this gorgeous wasp in the protected forest of “La Perla”—a breathtaking sanctuary that serves as a living reminder of the vast, ancient rainforests that once blanketed the entire coast of Ecuador.
