Assassin bugs (family Reduviidae) are highly skilled, terrestrial ambush predators instantly recognizable by their narrow heads, distinct “necks,” and sturdy, curved beaks designed for piercing armor. Within this predatory family, members of the genus Rhiginia have taken specialization to an extreme: they hunt toxic millipedes. While millipedes deter most predators by secreting foul, noxious chemical compounds like benzoquinones, these bold assassin bugs learned to strike swiftly, using their specialized, potent venom to completely paralyze the millipede before it can deploy its chemical defenses. The venom then liquefies the prey’s internal tissues from the inside out, allowing the bug to easily drink its meal. I encountered this fascinating millipede assassin while exploring the leaf litter of the protected forest of “La Perla” in the Esmeraldas province of Ecuador.
