You see me, now you don’t: The evasive nature of the Oedionychina flea beetle

Deep within the damp understory of the La Perla protected forest—a preserved at great effort remnant of the primeval forest in Ecuador’s Santo Domingo province—I crossed paths with a striking little leaf beetle (family: Chrysomelidae) that instantly demanded a closer look. This flea beetle, with its black and reddish elytra, likely belongs to the subtribe Oedionychina. What truly distinguishes these beetles under a macro lens is their comically hypertrophied hind legs. Their enormously swollen femora (thighs) house a specialized, spring-like mechanism known as the metafemoral spring. This internal architecture allows them to launch themselves into the air with explosive velocity at the slightest hint of danger—turning a painstaking macro composition into a game of hide-and-seek. I had only a short time to adjust the camera settings, before he vanished without me even noticing.
