Quick on the trigger: Okinawa’s sharpshooters

Sharpshooter leafhoppers (family: Cicadellidae) are among the most fascinating and dynamic subjects in the world. These striking insects are xylem-feeders, famous not only for their brilliant, high-contrast coloration but also for an eccentric biological habit: they forcibly eject droplets of excess liquid waste from their rear with a distinctive, rapid-fire popping motion. To evade predators, they often sport intricate patterns that mimic the local foliage perfectly, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. However, if their camouflage fails and they feel threatened, they vanish in the blink of an eye, utilizing incredibly powerful hind legs to jump and fly away at astonishing speeds. Some species are considered significant pests, damaging flora as they feed, but their true threat lies in their role as vectors, spreading plant-pathogenic bacteria that can devastate crops and orchards. I crossed paths with this gorgeous little leafhopper while exploring the lush greenery of Okinawa.
