Zooming into the details: A high-res photo revealed Sweden’s common globetail

Meet the common globetail (Sphaerophoria scripta), a slender hoverfly famous for its elongated body. As one of Europe’s most abundant and vital pollinators, this harmless insect relies on Batesian mimicry, sporting bright wasp-like stripes to bluff its way out of becoming a predator’s lunch. While the adults spend their days peacefully sipping nectar, their larvae are fierce, insatiable predators—a single larva can devour hundreds of aphids, making them an invaluable natural pest controller for any garden. These hoverflies are also remarkable endurance athletes, capable of migrating massive distances from southern Europe all the way to northern Scandinavia to bolster local summer populations. I crossed paths with this elegant traveler several times in scandinavian forests. Because of its tiny size and familiar, erratic hovering, I initially mistook it for another species. Only a careful review of high-resolution photos—zooming in close—enabled me to identify this magnificent long-distance voyager.
