Digger bees are fascinating solitary insects that excavate intricate tunnels in bare ground to raise their brood. Unlike social honeybees, every female is an independent solo worker who builds her own nesting chamber in sun-warmed loose soil, soft sandstone, or even the crumbling mortar between bricks. These bees are exceptionally fast and agile fliers, capable of hovering perfectly in mid-air before darting away. Their distinct flight patterns feature rapid zipping between blooms accompanied by a deep, resonant buzz that is significantly louder than that of many other bee species. A striking example is the white-banded digger bee (Amegilla quadrifasciata), a swift-flying solitary species distributed from Europe to North Africa and Japan. To harvest pollen from stubborn flowers, it employs a technique called buzz pollination: it tightly grips the blossom and vibrates its flight muscles at an ultra-high frequency, literally shaking the pollen loose. I had the pleasure of observing a few of these industrious bees visiting a quiet garden on the Greek island of Spetses during a lazy afternoon, their frantic speed providing a lovely contrast to the slow Mediterranean heat.
