Burrowing bugs (family Sehiridae) are fascinating, heavily armored insects celebrated for their fossorial adaptations and highly unusual maternal instincts. Though closely related to stink bugs, these peaceful foragers stand out as some of the most dedicated parents in the insect world. Unlike the vast majority of insects that abandon their offspring, a female black-winged burrower bug (Canthophorus melanopterus) digs a shallow underground nest to guard her clutch of over 100 eggs. Once they hatch, she actively forages for food, bringing specialized seeds—such as those from bastard toadflax (Thesium)—directly to her developing nymphs for several days. To facilitate their subterranean lifestyle, they possess heavily spined front legs adapted for tunneling through dense dirt and leaf litter, along with scent glands that emit a foul-smelling chemical cocktail to deter predators. I spotted this striking specimen while exploring the lush pathways of the Athens Botanical Garden on a sunny weekend.
