The Mexican tarantula-hawk wasp (Pepsis mexicana) is a striking spider hunter featuring a metallic dark-blue body, glossy wings tipped with white, and an intense warning coloration. Found from the southwestern United States through Central up to South America, these diurnal wasps exhibit strong sexual dimorphism: females possess curved antennae and a potent stinger, while males have straight antennae and cannot sting. Females track down giant tarantulas, paralyzing them with a sting before dragging them into a burrow to lay a single egg. The emerging larva then consumes the immobilized spider from the inside out, carefully avoiding vital organs to keep the meal fresh. Adult wasps, on the other hand, feed exclusively on nectar and pollen—and occasionally get “drunk” on fermented fruit, rendering them temporarily unable to fly! While a female’s sting delivers legendary, debilitating pain, its venom carries low toxicity and causes no lasting harm to humans. I encountered one of these awesome wasps in Nanegalito, Ecuador, and she was patient enough to let me capture some truly stunning photographs! 🙂
